Medical Physics is the application of radiation in the medical sciences. The American College of Radiology directs that medical imaging and radiation therapy machines be evaluated by a Qualified Medical Physicist, who is certified by the American Board of Radiology or equivalent certifying board. The medical physicist oversees quality assurance programs and is a resource for ensuring the safe use of radiation in the medical setting.
Medical physicists hold a masters or Ph.D. in medical physics or a related field and are board certified in one or more specialties. Medical physicists are required to maintain their clinical experience and board certification along with continuing medical education in their field of practice.
